The project, which lasts for two years commencing on 1<sup>st</sup> January 1999, is a "Concerted Action" therefore it does not involve new research but instead concentrates on a review of existing information and the establishment of agreed guidelines for the monitoring and regulation of marine aquaculture. The project will facilitate the establishment of a European Network to bring together scientists, producers, regulators and voluntary organisations, in an effort to co-ordinate and provide means for the efficient exchange and review of information. This will be achieved through the:</font></p> <blockquote> <ul type="disc"> <li><font size="2" face="Arial">establishment of a </font><a href="register.htm"><font size="2" face="Arial">register of experts</font></a><font size="2" face="Arial"> and their expertise</font></li> <li><font size="2" face="Arial">provision of a World Wide Web site and e-mail network</font></li> <li><font size="2" face="Arial">circulation of a </font><a href="newslett.htm"><font size="2" face="Arial">news letter</font></a></li> <li><font size="2" face="Arial">compilation of a computerised </font><a href="bibliogr.htm"><font size="2" face="Arial">bibliography</font></a></li> <li><font size="2" face="Arial">establishment of working groups for the review of specific issues</font></li> <li><font size="2" face="Arial">publication of </font><a href="topic.htm"><font size="2" face="Arial">topic papers</font></a><font size="2" face="Arial"> on specific issues by working groups</font></li> <li><font size="2" face="Arial">organisation of three </font><a href="workshop.htm"><font size="2" face="Arial">work shops</font></a><font size="2" face="Arial"> for the review and analysis of current practice and the establishment of a scientific basis for Best Environmental Practice</font></li> <li><font size="2" face="Arial">publication of workshop proceedings and project reports</font></li> </ul> </blockquote> <p><font size="2" face="Arial">The project is co-ordinated by Prof. Paul Read and Dr. Teresa Fernandes (Napier University, Edinburgh) with the support of a Project Management Assistant, Ms Karen Miller, and is undertaken in </font><a href="partners.htm"><font size="2" face="Arial">partnership</font></a><font size="2" face="Arial"> with 24 other organisations from 16 countries.</font></p> <p><font size="2" face="Arial">It is our intention to expand participation in the project in order to involve a wide spectrum of scientists, regulators, producers and voluntary organisations, from all member states within the European Union.
